| I grew up in another place and time. It was a world of stay at home Moms, Arts in the schools and field trips to NYC for our cultural and social education.
It really wasn’t all that long ago, that our kids enjoyed a well rounded education, giving them the tools to find a skill, talent or passion that wasn’t sport-based. Music appreciation classes gave us a knowlege base of modern, classical, opera, jazz, and included the opportunity for lessons on any instrument, supplied by the school. Large musical productions, mounted twice a year, were the chance for the missfits, techies and thespians to shine, and for me, forged a lifetime of love for the Theatre Arts. While my Son’s school offered a Senior Trip to the Holocaust Museum, the kids of the 70’s, sat in quiet rapture at The Metropolitan Opera House, while the grandeur of Carmen That memory rushed back today as I read of the passing of Beverly Sills. She was a Grand Dame, who spent a lifetime making sure young folks could experience that first thrill of when the house lights dim, and the magic begins. Farewell and Brava Miss Sills- Heaven’s soprano section must be so much sweeter today. |
